Amigurumi baby penguin

Would you like to crochet a cute amigurumi baby penguin?

This tutorial will guide you step-by-step to create this adorable project, perfect for gifts or decorations.

Useful information before starting

Working time: about 7 hours | Skill Level: intermediate

A sweet amigurumi baby penguin couldn’t miss in my collection of amigurumi animal.

The penguin’s body is worked in one piece, and separately I crocheted the feet, wings, and beak.

The final size of the penguin is 14 cm tall.

I worked two different kinds of yarn together and in different colors to recreate the particular color of the penguin’s fur.

You are not obliged to work with the same yarn or color; you can work only one kind of yarn without changing the proportions, but only the size.

Used yarn and accessories

To create this penguin amigurumi, you’ll need:

• For the body, wings and mask: AMIGURUMI CHENILLE ICE YARNS 50 gr (100% polyester) Super fine (1) 250 m light gray color cod. 52533
• For the body: BABY ALPACA SILK DROPS 50 gr (70% alpaca and 30% silk) Fine (2) 167 m dirty white color cod. 0100
• For the beak: CAMILLA COTTON ICE YARNS 50 gr (100% mercerized cotton) Fine (2) 125 m gold color cod. 23325
• For the wings, mask, and feet: LIMONE SCHOELLER UND STAHL 50 gr (100 % mercerized cotton) Fine (2) 125 m anthracite color cod. 144
• Crochet hook, 3.5 mm

• synthetic stuffing
• security eyes

To make the body, wings, the top of the head, and the tail of the amigurumi baby penguin, I worked together two kinds of yarn in two different colors:

• MAIN COLOR = Amigurumi Chenille light gray with Baby Alpaca Silk dirty white. (MC)
• SECOND COLOR = Amigurumi Chenille light gray with Limone yarn Anthracite. (SC)

Abbreviation and meanings (US terms)

• MR = magic ring
• SC = single crochet
• DC = double crochet
• INC = increase (2 SC in the same stitch)
• DEC = decrease ( SC 2 together)
• REP * = repeat from * to * all around (if not indicated)

Amigurumi baby penguin pattern

Start by crocheting the body using Baby Alpaca Silk and light gray Amigurumi Chenille. Work in rounds with single crochet stitches, gradually increasing to shape the belly.

STEP 1: penguin’s body

Start with the main color.

• Round 1: MR, 6 SC (6)
• Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)
• Round 3: *1 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (18)
• Round 4: 1 SC, INC, * 2SC, INC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 1 SC (24)
• Round 5: *3 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (30)
• Round 6: 2 SC, INC *4 SC, INC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 2 SC (36)
• Round 7: *5 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (42)
• Round 8: 3 SC, INC * 6 SC, INC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 3 SC (48)
• Round 9: 1 SC in each stitches around (48)
• Round 10: *7 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (54)
• Round 11: 1 SC in each stitches around (54)
• Round 12: 18 SC, INC, 5 SC, INC, 29 SC (56)
• Round 13: 1 SC in each stitches around (56)
• Round 14: 50 SC, 2 DEC, 2 SC (54)
• Rounds 15-16: 1 SC in each stitches around (54×2)
• Round 17: *7 SC, DEC *; REP * 6 times (48)
• Round 18-19: 1 SC in each stitches around (48×2)
• Round 20: 3 SC, DEC *6SC, DEC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 3 SC (42)
• Round 21-22: 1 SC in each stitches around (42×2)
• Round 23: *5 SC, DEC *; REP * 6 times (36)
• Rounds 24-25: 1 SC in each stitches around (36×2)
• Round 26: 2 SC, DEC * 4SC, DEC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 2 SC (30)
• Round 27: 1 SC in each stitches around (30)

STEP 2: The penguin’s head

From the next round, you have to change colors with MAIN COLOR (MC) and with SECOND COLOR (SC)

• Round 28: 4 SC, INC, change with SC and make *4 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times, 4 SC, change with MC and make INC, 4 SC, INC (36)
• Round 29: make 6 SC, change with SC and make 22 SC, change with MC and make 8 SC (36)
• Round 30: make 5 SC, INC, change with SC *5 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times, 4 SC, change with MC 1 SC, INC, 5 SC, INC (42)
• Rounds 31-32: 7 SC, change with SC and make 25 SC, change with MC and make 10 SC (42×2)
• Round 33: make 5 SC, DEC, change with SC *5SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times, 4 SC, change with MC 1 SC, DEC, 5 SC, DEC (36)
• Round 34: make 4 SC, DEC, change with SC *4 SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times, 3 SC, change with MC 1 SC, DEC, 4 SC, DEC (30)
• Round 35: make 3 SC, DEC, change with SC * 3 SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times, 2 SC, change with MC 1 SC, DEC, 3 SC, DEC (24)
• Round 36: make 2 SC, DEC, change with SC *2SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times, 1 SC, change with MC 1 SC, DEC, 2 SC, DEC (18)
  Stuffing and insert the security eyes.
• Round 37: make 1 SC, DEC, change with SC * 1 SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times, change with MC 1 SC, DEC, 1 SC, DEC (12)
• Round 38: 6 DEC (6)

STEP 3: Top of the head

Use the SECOND color to make the top of the penguin’s head.

• Round 1: MR, 6 SC (6)
• Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)
• Round 3: *1 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (18)
• Round 4: 1 SC, INC, * 2SC, INC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 1 SC (24)
• Round 5: *3 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (30)

Now work in row.

• Row 6: 8 SC and turn (8)
• Row 7: DEC, 4 SC, DEC, and turn (6)
• Row 8: DEC, 2 SC, DEC, and turn (4)
• Rows 9-11: 1 SC in each stitch and turn (4×3)
• Row 12: 2 DEC and turn (2)
• Row 13: 1 DEC (1)

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Leave a long tail and sew it on the head of the penguin.

STEP 4: Penguin’s beak

Use gold-colored yarn.

• Round 1: MR, 8 SC (8)
• Rounds 2-3: 1 SC in each stitches around (8×2)

Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the beak on the head.

STEP 5: Penguin’s wing (make 2)

Use SECOND Color

• Round 1: MR, 6 SC (6)
• Round 2: *1 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times (9)
• Round 3: *2 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times (12)
• Rounds 4-5: 1 SC in each stitches around (12×2)
• Round 6: *3 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times (15)
• Rounds 7-8: 1 SC in each stitches around (15×2)
• Round 9: *3 SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times (12)
• Rounds 10-11: 1 SC in each stitches around (12×2)
• Round 12: *2 SC, DEC *; REP * 3 times (9)
• Rounds 13-14: 1 SC in each stitches around (9×2)

Join together with 1 SC to close the hole.

Do not stuff. Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Sew the wings on the body of the baby penguin, amigurumi.

STEP 6: Penguin’s feet (make 2)

Use anthracite color yarn.

• Round 1: MR, 6 SC (6)
• Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)
• Round 3: *1 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (18)
• Round 4: 1 SC, INC, * 2SC, INC *; REP * 5 times, and finish with 1 SC (24)
• Round 5: *3 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (30)
• Round 6: *1 DC, picot (= 3 CHs and 1 SL ST in the 1st CH) in the same stitch 1 DC, 2 SC *; REP * 2 times, 1 SL ST

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Leave a long tail to sew the feet on the bottom of the body.

STEP 7: Penguin’s tail

Use the SECOND color.

• Round 1: MR, 6 SC (6)
• Round 2: *1 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times (9)
• Round 3: 1 SC in each stitches around (9)
• Round 4: *2 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times (12)
• Round 5: *3 SC, INC *; REP * 3 times (15)
• Round 6: 1 SC in each stitches around (15)

Close with 1 SL ST in the next stitch, cut the yarn, and leave a long tail to sew the tail on the body of the amigurumi baby penguin.
