Welcome to the Valentine’s Day tutorial! A perfect opportunity to get your yarn, crochet, and imagination flowing to create romantic heart-shaped home accessories.
This crochet coaster is perfect:
- as a handmade gift (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas)
- to add a romantic touch to your table
- to practice increases, decreases and picot edging
- to use cotton yarn scraps
Great for beginners and relaxing even for experienced crocheters.
Materials you need
- 50 gr FIOCCO Tre Sfere 100 % Cotton yarn FINE (2) color Bordeaux (code 7298)
- Crochet hook suitable for your yarn size 5 (3 mm).
- Stitch marker (facoltative)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Pinky Time tip: cotton yarn is ideal for coasters because it’s heat-resistant and easy to wash.
With a single ball of yarn, I managed to make 3 coasters 20 cm wide and 15 cm long.

Necessary crochet stitches and techniques
Us crochet terminology
- Chain (CH)
- beginning CH (beg CH).
- Single crochet (SC)
- Slip stitch (SL ST)
- Double crochet (DC)
- Increase (INC) – 2 DC in the same stitch
- Decrease (DEC) – 2 DC together
- Picot (PIC) – 3 CHs and 1 SL ST in the 3rd CH from hook
- Repeat from * to * until the end of the row (REP *)
- Fan stitch – 5 DC in the same stitch

How to crochet the Heart Coaster
Start with a foundation chain and work the stitches to shape the heart, creating the two top curves with increases and the bottom point with decreases.
Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect yet — the picot edge will define the shape beautifully.
Once the base is complete, work a picot edging all around the heart. This decorative border gives the coaster a romantic and finished look and is very easy to learn.
Make a base of chain stitches, and then work in round to form a basic oval, which will be the central part of the heart.
Base of the heart coaster
The 5 double crochets worked in the same stitch must end exactly on the 3rd stitch of the 5 worked on the opposite side of the foundation chain, i.e., the upper central part of the heart.
Shape the tip of the heart
The increases must be worked on the sides of the heart, therefore on the 7 double crochets worked on the sides.
- ROUND 3: 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) and make 1 DC in the base of the worked CH.
1 DC in the next stitch, * 2 DC in the next stitch, 1 DC in the next stitch *; REP * 3 times, 8 DC, 5 DC close together, 8 DC, REP* 7 times, 18 DC, FAN STITCH, 18 DC, REP * 3 times, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. (100 stitches)
When you are working the lower part of the heart, that is, towards the tip, from one round to the other, you will increase by 2 the stitches to be unravelled between one side and the other.
- ROUND 4: 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) work 1 DC in the base of the worked CH.
2 DC, * 2 DC in the next stitch, 2 DC*, REP* 3 times, 6 DC, 5 DC close together, 6 DC, REP * 7 times, 20 DC, FAN STITCH, 20 DC, REP * 3 times, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. (114 stitches)
The top center of the heart gets tighter with each round, so I recommend leaving a gap of 6 double crochets before closing with 5 DC on both sides.
- ROUND 5: 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) and work 1 DC in the base of the worked CH.
3 DC, * 2 DC in the next stitch, 3 DC *, REP* 3 times, 6 DC, 5 DC close together, 6 DC, REP * 7 times, 22 DC, FAN STITCH, 22 DC, REP * 3 times, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. (128 stitches)
How to resize the heart
To resize the heart, you can:
- Change the yarn to a thicker weight, following the same pattern;
- Increase the number of base chains, making a larger oval.
If you’re considering the second option, there are some basic rules to keep in mind to modify the pattern shown above and recreate a suitable one, based on the number of chains you’ll make, to make the base oval. Watch the video at 17:56 for a detailed explanation.
2 crochet borders to use to finish the crochet heart coaster
Simple single crochet border
To create the edge, you can finish with white yarn and alternate 2 single crochets with 2 chains, skipping one stitch.
In the video tutorial, at minute 40:44, I explain this type of edge in detail.
Decorative picot border
Once the base is complete, crochet a picot border all around, giving the coaster a romantic and refined look.
Work 2 SC, and then * inside the space between 2 CH made in the previous round, work 1 SC, 1 picot, and 1 SC *; then continue with 1 SC in the next 2 stitches before repeating the sequence indicated between the asterisks.
The Picot is formed by working 3 CHs, then making a slip stitch in the 3rd chain.
