🧶 Used yarn and accessories
To make the heart-shaped crochet coaster, I chose a cotton yarn, suitable for making table accessories, both for washing and for the softness and flexibility that is obtained in the final result.

- 50 gr FIOCCO Tre Sfere 100 % Cotton yarn FINE (2) color Bordeaux (code 7298)
- Crochet hook size 3 mm.

With a single ball yarn I managed to make 3 coasters 20 cm wide and 15 cm long.

The yarn used for this project you can buy it to Filati Romance Shop click on the button below to visit the shop👇
Useful information before starting
To create the flat crochet heart and use it as a coaster, I made an oval base, on which I worked in the round.
To develop the heart shape on the oval, you will work side increases and decreases at the top center and the fan stitch at the base, to form the point.
The basic point that will be used will be the double crochet.
How to crochet a 5 DC close together = collect the next 5 CHs and make 1 CH.
How to crochet a FAN STITCH = 5 DC in the same stitch
📗 Abbreviations & meanings (US terms)
- CH = chain
- beg CH = beginning CH.
- SC = single crochet
- SLST = slip stitch
- HDC = half double crochet
- DC = double crochet
- TRC= treble crochet
- INC = Increase, 2 SC in the same stitch
- DEC = Decrease, 2 SC together
- PIC = picot (3 CHs and 1 SL ST in the 3rd CH from hook)
- REP * = repeat from * to * until the end of the row
Make a base of chain stitches, and then work in round to form a basic oval, which will be the central part of the heart.
Crochet heart coaster pattern
1ST STEP
ROUND | INSTRUCTIONS | TOT |
---|---|---|
1 | Make 31 CHs + 3 beg CH (= 1st DC). Work 3 DC in the 4th CH from hook, 12 DC, 5 DC close together (central part of the heart), make 1 CH, 12 DC, 7 DC in the last CH of the row. You will be on the opposite side of the chain and continue as follows: 14 DC, FAN STITCH (tip of the heart), 14 DC, 3 DC in the last CH, fasten off with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. | 72 |

Note that the 5 DC worked in the same stitch end up exactly on the 3rd stitch of the 5, worked on the opposite side of the base chain, i.e. the upper central part of the heart.
2ND STEP
2 | 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) continue working in round. 1 DC in the base of the worked CH, 2 DC in the next 3 stitches, 10 DC, 5 DC close together, 10 DC, 2 DC in the next 7 stitches, 16 DC, FAN STITCH, 16 DC, 2 DC in the next 3 stitches, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. | 86 |

The increases must be worked on the sides of the heart, i.e. over the 7 DC worked on the sides
3RD STEP
3 | 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) and make 1 DC in the base of the worked CH. 1 DC in the next stitch, * 2 DC in the next stitch, 1 DC in the next stitch *; REP * 3 times, 8 DC, 5 DC close together, 8 DC, REP* 7 times, 18 DC, FAN STITCH, 18 DC, REP * 3 times, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. | 100 |

When you are working the lower part of the heart, i.e. towards the tip, the stitches to be carried out between one side and the other will increase by 2.
4TH STEP
4 | 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) work 1 DC in the base of the worked CH. 2 DC, * 2 DC in the next stitch, 2 DC*, REP* 3 times, 6 DC, 5 DC close together, 6 DC, REP * 7 times, 20 DC, FAN STITCH, 20 DC, REP * 3 times, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. | 114 |

The upper central part of the heart tightens more and more with each round, so I recommend leaving a space of 6 DC before going to close with 5 DC both on one side and on the other.
5TH STEP
5 | 3 beg CH (= 1st DC) and work 1 DC in the base of the worked CH. 3 DC, * 2 DC in the next stitch, 3 DC *, REP* 3 times, 6 DC, 5 DC close together, 6 DC, REP * 7 times, 22 DC, FAN STITCH, 22 DC, REP * 3 times, close with 1 SL ST in the 3rd beg CH. | 128 |
How to resize the crochet heart
To resize the heart, you can:
- Change the yarn to a thicker thickness, following the same pattern;
- Increase the number of base chains, making a bigger oval.
If you consider following the second option then there are some basic rules to take into account to modify the pattern shown above and recreate a suitable one, based on the number of chain stitches you will make, to make the basic oval. Watch the video at 17:56 to understand in detail.
Simple border in single crochet

To make the border, you can finish with white yarn and alternate 2 single crochet with 2 chains, skipping a stitch.
In the video tutorial, at 40:44, I explain this type of edge in detail.
Edge with picot

Another type of edge that can be added to the previous one or done on its own is to work 2 SC * inside the space of 2 CH made in the previous round, work 1 SC, 1 picot and 1 SC * ; then continue with 1 SC in the next 2 stitches before repeating the sequence indicated between the asterisks.
The PICOT is formed by 3 CHs and then a slip stitch is made in the 3rd chain from hook.
In the video, at 42:40, I show exactly how to do it!
