Useful Tips and Materials Before you Begin
Materials needed:
- 50 gr medium-weight cotton and acrylic yarn in your preferred colors (e.g., light pink for the case, beige for the nose, and for the eyes);
- Crochet hook: Size 3.5 mm (or recommended for your yarn)
- Zipper: match the length of your pencil case
- Tapestry needle and scissors
Tips:
- Keep your tension consistent for a neat and durable result.
- Practice making basic crochet stitches (single crochet, chain, slip stitch) if you’re a beginner.
How to Crochet the Bunny Pencil Case:
Abbreviations & meanings (US terms)
- CH = chain
- SC = single crochet
- SLST = slip stitch
- INC = Increase, 2 SC in the same stitch
- DEC = Decrease, 2 SC together
- REP * = repeat from * to * until the end of the row
- Start by chaining the width of your desired case (e.g., 40 Chains).
- Work half double crochet (HDC) rows until you reach your preferred height (approx. 20 rows for a medium-sized case)
- Fold the rectangle in half, then crochet the two sides together using slip stitches. Leave the top open.
Follow the pattern below:
- Start with 40 CHs.
- Row 1: 1 SC in the 2nd CH from hook and in the next Chains (40)
- Row 2: 2 CH = 1st HDC; turn and work 1 HDC in each stitch (40)
Repeat the 2nd row until you reach the desired height. I worked until I reached a height of 23 cm.
Work the corner with single crochet
- Round 1: 1 SC all around the work. DO NOT WORK the upper side. (160)
Fold in half
Fold the rectangle in half, then crochet the two sides together using slip stitches. Leave the top open.
Bunny ears:
Make 2 ears. Count 36 stitches from the top left of the row, and from that point, start working on the ears.
- Row 1: Work 15 SC. 1 Turning CH (15)
- Rows 2-11: 1 SC in the next 9 stitches. 1 Turning CH (9×10)
- Row 12: 2 DEC, 1 SC, 2 DEC (5)
- Row 13: DEC, 1 SC, DEC (3)
- Row 14: DEC, 1 SC (2)
- Row 15: 1 SC on the side of the work to reach the base. (14)
Repeat the pattern from 1st to 15th row to make a second ear.
Reach the end of the row, making 6 SC. Close with 1 SL ST in the next stitch, cut the yarn and hide it.
Now work 9 CHs + 1 Turning CH.
Follow the pattern from the 1st to 14th row to make the ear to fix on the ears made before, worked on the pencil case.
Once you reach the 14th row, make 1 SL ST on the foundation chains to position the hook on the opposite side of the work, and join the ears with SC. (See Picture below.)
If you want to stuff the ears, make it before sewing.
Circular nose
Begin with a magic Ring.
- Round 1: MR, 6 SC (6)
- Round 2: 6 INC (12)
- Round 3: * 1 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (18)
- Round 4: 1 SC, INC, *2 SC, INC *, REP * 5 times, 1 SC (24)
- Round 5: * 3 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (30)
- Round 6: 2 SC, INC, * 4 SC, INC *; REP * 5 times, 2 SC (36)
- Round 7: * 5 SC, INC *; REP * 6 times (42)
Embroider the nose as shown in picture below
Sew the circle in the center of the pencil case.
Eyes (Chain Embroidery)
Using white yarn, create a long chain for each eye (10 CHs).
Sew the chain onto the front of the case, shaping it into an arc for a cute sleepy-eye effect.
Finishing Touches
- Attach a zipper to the open edge of the pencil case using a needle and thread.
- Or you can use tear-off stickers to place under the ears, as shown in the photo below
