โ€œHi Giulia it’s a pleasure to share my tutorial for the first time, and I hope I succeed in explaining it!โ€

โ€” Angela Tortorici, follower

โ€œIโ€™ve taken step-by-step photos to explain how to complete everything, and if anything isnโ€™t clear, feel free to leave a comment below the article. Giulia and I will do our best to clear up any doubts you may have. The Christmas star begins by making the petals in three different sizes (small, medium, and large), followed by the leaves. Finally, all the parts are wrapped together and secured with wire and green tape. Use two different thicknesses of wire: a thin one for the leaves and petals, and a thicker one to create the stem and wrap the other wires around it. Letโ€™s get started with the tutorial! Have fun.โ€

Useful Information and tips before you start

Before you begin, make sure you have all the materials ready:

  • Cotton or acrylic yarn (choose classic holiday colors like red, green, white, or gold for a festive touch!)
  • Crochet hook: we recommend a 3 mm hook
  • Green plastic-coated wire
  • Thin stainless steel wire (20 meters, 0.6 cm thick)
  • Green tape
  • Shears
  • Needle and scissors

Tips

  • If you’re new to crochet, don’t worry! Every step is simple and clear, and the photo explanations will guide you through each part.
  • Pay attention to your yarn tension: for a stiffer star, try working a bit tighter.
  • Get Creative! You can embellish the star with beads or sequins for an extra special touch.

Abbreviation and meaning (US terms)

  • CH = chain
  • SC = single crochet
  • SL ST = slip stitch
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • DC = double crochet
  • TC = treble crochet
  • DTC= double treble crochet
  • TTC = Triple treble crochet
  • REP * = repeat from * to * until the end of the row (if not indicated)

Project Explanation:

1. Create the little petals

Start by creating the petals. Each petal will have a long, elegant shape, bringing your star to life.

Follow the step-by-step photos to see how each petal takes shape.

  1. Make 20 CHs. Cut the wire into 2 pieces the same length as the chain youโ€™ve made, adding an extra 4 cm.
  2. Work 19 SC in each chain; wrap the thin wire.
  3. Make 19 SC on the opposite side of the Chain.
  4. 1 SL ST around the two pieces of wire and in the next stitch.
  5. In the next round, work: 1 SL ST, 2 SC, 2 HDC, 2 DC, 2 TC in the next 4 stitches, 2 DC, 2 HDC, 2 SC and 1 SL ST in the last 2 stitches.
  6. Repeat step 5 on the opposite side as well.

Twist the wire at the base of the petal, and make a total of 5 petals.

2. Create the medium flower petals

  1. Make 25 CH. Cut the wire as you did for the small petals.
  2. Work 1 SC in each CHs (24), wrap the thin wire.
  3. Make 1 SC on the opposite side of the chain (24).
  4. 1 SL ST around the two pieces of wire and in the next stitch.
  5. In the next round, work so: 1 SL ST, 2 SC, 2 HDC, 2 DC, 2 TC in the next 3 stitches, 2 DTC in the next 3 stitches, 2 TC in the next 3 stitches, 2 DC, 2 HDC, 2 SC and 1 SL ST in the last 2 stitches.
  6. Repeat the 5th point on the opposite side.

Twist the wire at the base of the petal, and make a total of 5 petals.

3. Create the long petals

Follow the same initial procedure used for the first petals, starting with 30 chains.

  • Work 1 SC in each chain and around the metal thread (29). When you reach the 2nd round, work as follows:

1 SL ST, 2 SC, 2 HDC, 2 DC, 2 TC, 2 DTC in the next 3 stitches, 2 TTC in the next 4 stitches, 2 DTC in the next 3 stitches, 2 DC, 2 HDC, 2 SC and 1 SL ST in the last 2 stitches.

Repeat on the opposite side of the chain. Make 5 petals.

4. Assembling the petals

Once all the petals and leaves are done, sew them together with a yarn needle, forming a symmetrical star. Make sure the petals are spaced evenly and the leaves are balanced around the central part.

5. Create the pistil and central flower

Cut a piece of green plastic-coated wire the length needed to create the stem.

  1. Wrap some yellow cotton around the tip of the wire.
  2. Form a small ball.
  3. Bend the tip of the wire with pliers to secure the cotton.
  4. Trim any excess wire.

This small pistil will act as a pin to hold the flower securely. Now create the central yellow flower by following the pattern below.

  1. Make 5 CHs and close the chains into a circle with 1 slip stitch
  2. Make 7 CHs
  3. In the 4th chain from the hook, make 4 DC and close them together with 1 SL ST.
  4. Make SL STs until you reach the central ring.
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to create a total of 9 petals.

6. Assembling the petals with the pistil

Move on to assembling the flower.

  2. Insert the stem into the red flower.
  3. Pull the wire through until the yellow flower sits perfectly in the center.
  4. Wrap the red wire and the petal wires around the stem.

7. Create the leaves

To add a natural touch, weโ€™ll make the leaves.

  1. Make 30 CHs.
  2. 3 SC, 3 HDC, 3 DC, 11 TC, 3 DC, 3 HDC, 1 SC in the last 3 stitches.
  3. Repeat step 2 on the other side of the base chain as well.
  4. 3 SC, 3 HDC, 3 DC, 11 TC, 3 INC of DC in the next stitch, 3 DC, 3 HDC, and 1 SC in the last 3 stitches. Repeat the steps on the opposite side of the round.
  5. Cut a piece of stainless steel wire to insert around the leaf.
  6. Work 1 SC all around the leaf to cover the wire.

Follow the previous instructions to make a total of 6 leaves. Attach the leaves in pairs by twisting their wires together at the base.

Finishing Touches and Decorations

Pay attention to finishing: trim any excess yarn, and if you like, you can add a small string to hang the star on your Christmas tree. It can also be used as a table decoration or a gift ornament.
