In this tutorial, youโll learn how to create a beautiful crochet velvet Easter egg, perfect for decorating your home during the Easter season. We will cover a polystyrene egg using soft velvet yarn and add simple decorative details for an elegant final result.
Crocheting Easter decorations is a creative and relaxing activity. In this project, instead of making an egg from scratch, we will cover a ready-made base. This allows you to achieve a neat and professional result even if you are a beginner.
What you will find in this tutorial
Tools and Materials I use
To make your crochet velvet Easter egg, you will need:
- Polystyrene egg (size 14 cm)
- Velvet yarn (Velluto Miss Tricot Filati, antique pink color โ code 6)
- White yarn (for decoration)
- Stitch marker
- 6.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors

Why use velvet yarn
Velvet yarn is perfect for this project because:
- It is soft and plush
- It covers the polystyrene base very well
- It gives an elegant and modern look
- It is easy to work with simple stitches
This makes it ideal for creating a refined crochet velvet Easter egg without complicated techniques.
How to cover a polystyrene egg with crochet
To work in the round using the recommended yarn, I suggest not starting with a magic ring. Instead, begin with 2 chains (ch) and work your first stitches into the second chain from the hook.
This type of yarn tends to break easily if pulled too tightly, and using a magic ring could increase the risk of breakage when tightening the loop.
To create the base:
- Start working in the round from the top of the egg
- Increase gradually to follow the shape
- Work in single crochet or half double crochet for a compact fabric
- Insert the polystyrene egg halfway through
- Continue decreasing until the egg is fully closed
The velvet yarn will help hide small imperfections.
Spiral chain decoration
Once the egg is fully covered:
- Make chains using the white yarn
- Place them around the egg in a spiral shape
- Sew them in place with a yarn needle or small hidden stitches
This creates a lovely contrast with the antique pink and enhances your crochet velvet Easter egg.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 15 cm (6 inches), then close the opening by pulling the stitches tight, just as shown in the video tutorial.
Chain decoration
Attach the cotton yarn to the covered egg and create a chain. Wrap it around the egg and join it with a slip stitch.
Skip about 3 rounds between each chain line to recreate a striped effect on the velvet surface.
Watch the video tutorial for a clearer understanding of this step.
Helpful tips
- Use a slightly larger hook to keep the velvet soft
- Do not pull the yarn too tightly to avoid deforming the work
- Choose pastel colors for a more Easter-inspired look
