Written instruction and video tutorial for making a leaf with alternating relief single crochet. Its name is Venetian leaf, let’s find out how to do it together.
With the arrival of autumn, tutorials on crochet leaves cannot be missing, and I wanted to experiment with a particular leaf that I found on the web, namely the Venetian leaf!
🎬 Video tutorial how to crochet a Venetian’s leaf
🧶 Used yarn and accessories
- Mercerized cotton FINE (2)
- Crochet hook size 3 mm
Using the same type of yarn that I used, the leaf will measure approximately 11cm in length.
Useful information before starting
The processing of the leaf is carried out with the single crochet in relief and is worked in a back and forth row starting from a base chain stitch.
The curvature of the leaf will depend on the number of initial chain stitches.
Lengthen the leaf by continuing to work rows to the desired length.
📗 Abbreviations & meanings (US terms)
- CH = chain
- SC = single crochet
- SLST = slip stitch
- INC = Increase, 2 SC in the same stitch
- REP * = repeat from * to * until the end of the row
📜 Crochet pattern of the leaf
Let’s start by doing a basic chain, and the number of initial chain must be an odd number.
|Start in the 2nd CH from hook and make SC along the row, in the last stitch of the row work 3 SC in the same CH.
Now you are on the opposite side of the chain.
Work 1 SC till the last CH.
|Each new row starts with CH 2, turn the work and skip the first stitch.
Work the single crochets along the entire row, working only in back loop.
|Always do the double increase (3 SC in the same stitch) in the central stitch, where the increase was done in the previous round.
Continue working SC on the opposite side, always working only in the back loop, skipping the last stitch.
📌 You will have the same number of stitches on both sides
Now continue doing the instructions on the NEXT ROW until you reach your preferred length.
Instruction leaf with 17 foundation chains
|Make 17 CHs. Start in the 2nd CH from hook and make 1 SC in each CHs till the end. In the last CH, work a double increase (3 SC in the same stitch). Work 1 SC in each CH on the opposite side of the foundation CH.
|2 turning CH. Skip the first stitch and work 15 SC BACK LOOP ONLY.
Make a double increase in the next stitch (the central point of the leaf). Continue with 15 SC BACK LOOP ONLY. Skip the last stitch.
|3 – 8
|Follow ROW 2 instructions until reach the desired size
Crochet leaf stem explanation
|Once you reach the desired length work 15 SC until you reach the center point of the leaf, ch 8 and work on the CH just done 1 SC from the 2nd CH from the hook until you reach the base of the leaf.
Work 15 SL ST. Close and fasten off.
📌 If you want a longer stem, all you have to do is increase the initial chain stitches.
