How to Make a Mini Jute Crochet Basket: Step-by-Step Tutorial

How to Make a Mini Jute Crochet Basket: Step-by-Step Tutorial

If you love crochet projects and want to add a rustic touch to your home, this mini jute basket is perfect. Easy to make, versatile, and beautiful when decorated with colorful threads.

Jute is a coarse yarn that immediately gives your projects a rustic effect. In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a mini jute crochet basket that can be used as an egg holder, place card, or coaster. By following the step-by-step instructions, even intermediate beginners can achieve perfect results.

Materials

  • NATURAL JUTA Mondial yarn orange color
  • COTTON pastel green yarn
  • Crochet hook size: 5 mm (to use with jute yarn) and 3 mm (to use with cotton yarn)
  • needle
  • scissor
  • stitchmarker

With cotton yarn, instead, we will create an external decoration, so adding it is optional, as the basket is beautiful even without it.

Using the same yarn I suggested, the final size you will achieve is approximately 9 cm (3.5 inches) in height and 10 cm (4 inches) in width.

To guide you, I created a video showing all the steps to make the mini jute crochet basket. The video is in Italian but has English subtitles. Follow along to see each stitch and the finishing decoration in action.

Step 1: Start the Basket Base

  1. Make a magic ring and work 6 single crochets inside.
  2. Close the round with a slip stitch.
  3. Continue increasing regularly to achieve the desired base size.

Step 2: Crochet the Sides

  • Once the base is done, work single crochets without increases until reaching the desired height.
  • Keep tension consistent for straight, sturdy walls.

Step 3: Finish and Decorate

  • End with a round working the crab stitch.
  • Hide the yarn tail using a yarn needle.
  • Add bows or colored decorations to personalize your mini basket.

Crochet Edging: Crab Stitch

Crochet Edging: Crab Stitch

Among the many crochet edgings you can make, my favorite is the crab stitch.

Unlike most crochet techniques, this stitch is worked from left to right, and it creates a beautiful twisted edge. Once you learn it, youโ€™ll want to use it everywhere!

Let’s see how to do it:

  • Start with 1 chain, keeping the yarn behind your work.
  • Insert the hook from front to back into the next stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop from back to front so you have two loops on your hook.
  • Yarn over again and pull through both loops to complete the stitch.

Decoration

After completing the edging, we will create a decorative band by working directly onto the basket, just below the edge.

Use a cotton yarn in a color you like, preferably contrasting with the basket color.

  • Attach the yarn to your hook and insert it into a stitch just below the finished edge. Work behind each single crochet post, making one single crochet with the green yarn. Once you complete the round, make 1 single crochet in the first stitch worked.
  • Continue the round working only in the front loop:
  • (1 single crochet, 2 half double crochets, 1 single crochet) in the same stitch, skip 1 stitch, and repeat the instructions in parentheses (โ€ฆ) until the end of the round.
  • Fasten off and pull the yarn through the first stitch to secure it, then weave in the ends.

You can use it as a coaster.

If you make it in different colors, it can also become a lovely place setting decoration.

🎨Easter Color Ideas for Your Mini Jute Basket

Letโ€™s look at some colors you can use to decorate your home for Easter:

  • YELLOW – symbolizes sunlight, and since spring arrives during Easter time, itโ€™s a must-have!
  • PINK – a color that represents passion and vitality in love, both for others and yourself. It helps lighten the mind and drive away negative thoughts, while also symbolizing openness toward others.
  • LIGHT BLUE – the color of loyalty and idealism, it conveys a sense of calm and peace.
  • GREEN – a color that represents balance, compassion, and harmony. It reflects love for nature and encourages connection with natural rhythms and traditions.

These are all colors that evoke spring: the sun, flowers, the sky, and the grassโ€”my absolute favorites!

Now choose your favorite combinations and decorate your table, without forgetting plenty of chocolate.😜
